Jenny
Vesta’s had a rough
day at school. She threw rocks
in class and got sent to the Prinicipal’s office. But
that’s not nearly as
rough as the secret she’s keeping: her mom fell into a space
crack and came
back as gas. Ever since her disappearance, Jenny’s been
living on her own in
the Outer Asteroids, forging school notes from her mom and getting down
to the
last of the groceries. She’s even running out of radium
kibble to feed her pet
starmots, Siri and Fury, all she’s got left in the way of
family, since she
never knew her dad. If the school finds out she’s all alone,
they’ll probably
send her to live with one of those rock-nosed kids from the inner
planets, who
always find ways to remind her she’s from the wrong side of
the meteor belt. Then
if her mom does come back, she won’t know where to find her.
To make matters
worse, the crumble-down asteroid they’d called home is
literally falling apart,
floating away bit-by-bit, faster than Jenny can glue it back together.
